Proper Positioning

  1. Hold the bar with a pronated grip about shoulder width apart

  2. Stand with the feet planted on the floor about hip to shoulder width

  3. Bend the knees slightly

  4. Palms facing back

  5. Elbows pointed to the side away from the body

  6. Engage the core and the glutes for stability

Proper Technique

  1. Focus on contracting the anterior deltoid (front shoulder)

  2. Raise arms in front of the body until they are parallel to the floor

  3. Elbows should be above the wrists

  4. Slowly lower, pushing against the direction of the barbell

  5. Return to starting position, do not lean the barbell against the body

Essential Tips

  1. Do not use momentum from the hips

  2. Lighten the load

  3. Do not swing the weight

  4. Keep feet planted, avoid coming up on the toes

  5. Do not let hands go above shoulder level

  6. Lead with the elbows
